All Saints Episcopal Church

Yoga Sessions

The Yoga sessions at all Saints have been meeting for about five years.  The sessions are free and open to anyone over the age of thirteen who would like to attend. This is a Christian based exercise program that focuses on flexibility, balance and relaxation.

A typical session would be as follows:   We open with the Lords Prayer and centering exercises that help to let the day fade into the back ground as we begin to relax our bodies. We do slow, easy, loosening exercises to release tension that we are holding in our necks and backs, then we move on to balance poses.  As we age, we begin to lose our balance due to illness and ear infections throughout our lives.  Balance is very important to prevent falls and broken bones.  After balance we stretch to keep our flexibility and tone our muscles.   Then we end with a relaxation time lying on our mats as we practice breathing techniques and listen to a quiet meditative reading.  The session is over when The Prayer of St. Theresa is said.

We meet every Wednesday 5:30PM- 6:30 PM. This is a low impact exercise program, we stretch, relax, laugh and enjoy each others company.  For more information or to be put on the email list for this group,  please contact: Kaye Staggs 479-970-9316 kstaggs724@yahoo.com   or the church office.

A.  No one is too old. This class is structured for people over the age of thirty  that has never taken an exercise class before. Our oldest member is 80. It is always recommended that you check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Q.  What is the focus of the sessions?
A.   To learn to release stress and tension that we hold in our bodies.  To relax our minds and in doing so, our souls.  To keep our bodies flexible. and our balance in good shape. As we age  we tend to lose  balance due to illness and ear infections over our lifetime, without good  balance we are more susceptible to falls and broken bones.

Q.   Is this a serious kind of class in which the instructor will criticize me, if I can’t do what others are doing?
A. Absolutely not!  You are never in competition with anyone else. Yoga does not adhere to the No Pain No Gain theory.  In Yoga if something hurts you then you should not do it. You only do what your body tells you to do. We try to make our sessions relaxed and fun. There is laughter and fellowship which is also good for the body and soul.

A.  Loose fitting clothes, such as stretch pants or shorts, sweatsuits anything comfortable with an elastic waist band.  Socks.
